The Department of Neurology offers a one-year Vascular Neurology Fellowship approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This comprehensive program provides training in the inpatient and outpatient management of cerebrovascular disorders under the supervision of internationally renowned faculty.  

Training will primarily take place within the VCU Medical Center in downtown Richmond, Virginia. Fellows receive training in a comprehensive stroke center that sees an average of 1,000 stroke patients each year, with one of the highest rates and fastest times of intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator (IV tPA) administration and stroke intervention. Fellows may also get the opportunity to rotate at the newly opened Sheltering Arms Institute: Physical Rehabilitation Hospital.

Strengths of the program include extensive training in stroke neuroimaging, neurocritical care, acute stroke evaluation, assessment for stroke intervention and outpatient stroke prevention. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in clinical research and ongoing clinical trials.   

Completion of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship prepares the candidate for an academic career, and courses in research methodology can be incorporated into the curriculum for those interested.

Applicants must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited neurology or child neurology residency program, an AOA-approved neurology or child neurology residency program, a neurology or child neurology program with ACGME International Advanced Speciality Accreditaion, or a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada-accredited or College of Family Physicians of Canada-accredited neurology or child neurology residency program located in Canada. Applicants must also have successfully passed through USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Level 3.

Any applicants unable to begin training by July 1^st of the appointment year must notify the program coordinator and program director before their interview. Approval for off-cycle training will be granted by the GME office on a case by case basis.

• Tele-Stroke
• Outpatient Stroke or Rehabilitation

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2025-26 academic year. Our Vascular Neurology fellowship program will resume recruitment using the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and applications will only be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for the academic year 2026-27.
